Hi everyone! Welcome to the official first post of the Glitter Galaxy Cafe! Today I am excited to share with you what I've enjoyed in the month of july 2023 so that you may take inspiration and find hidden gems like I did! I will be including all the classic things you would expect in a monthly favorites post, books, music, movies and miscellaneous. So without further ado, let's dive into some of the things I have enjoyed this past month and hopefully you will also find enjoyable!
Books Of course I am going to start with books! This month was abundant with books as my birthday was recent and I had received a ton of books as gifts, which is my absolute dream! Thanks to all who gifted me a book this year :) Anyways, let's dive into the books I found fun this july.
1. To Kill A mockingbird By Harper Lee
Shockingly, I am in love with a book that has been assigned for a literature class for the first time. This is a book that you love more as you read and realize the tiny details and spoilers the author has been giving the reader this whole time! I also absolutely love the movie which I will be talking about soon. I think although there is some issues with the book like Atticus Finch being a great father, teaching his kids how to be empathic, yet he still lacks in terms of following gender norms. I would expect a person who is not racist to also not be sexist but that fails in this book unfortunately. Besides this, I thoroughly enjoyed the book as it returned me to my childhood days where the summers were unbearably hot. I will give it a 3.5/5 for the enjoyable and easy to understand writing, good use of metaphors and the loveable characters like Atticus and Scout.
2. American Psycho By Bret Easton Ellis
This book is so much different than the movie. Trust me on this. While the movie provides a more toned down, satirical approach to the psycho male, the book straight up dives into the mind of the American psycho. In this book you will read every disgusting thing Patrick Bateman has thought or said outloud. Often thinking about what brands a person is wearing, he shows his biggest weakness, his desire to fit into the society. Although this was shown in the movie, especially by the iconic business card scene yet it wasn't show as this constant, primary judgement that happens in Bateman's head. The book is so much messed up than the movie already was, so I am giving it a 3/5.
Movies & TV
Right now the Barbie movie and Oppenheimer are all the craze! It's impossible to scroll on instagram without Ryan Gosling praise and barbenheimer memes popping up every few videos. Unfortunately I didn't read these but rather shifted my focus on famous classical book adaptations, like Dracula and Frankenstein, and the classic movie from Charles Chaplin "Modern Times" and I think there's a lesson to learn here. 1. Dracula
I particularly enjoyed this movie because of it lead actor, Bela Lugosi. He owns a very particular Hungarian accent which adds a depth to the character Dracula, as he speaks perfect english with no grammar mistakes but only an accent. The movie itself was entertaining to watch and the movie summerised the book efficiently in my opinion. The book itself is a 500 page brick (which I think is still worth reading, I just couldn't) and this manages to summerize most of the events pretty accurately. a qood alternative to reading the book and learn about the origins of the vampire (ALTHOUGH - it is most certainly not the first vampire story, I also recommend checking "Carmilla" out for an older, female written ancestor of the classic vampire.)
Super entertaining, sometimes awkward because of the stares, 4.6/5
2. Frankenstein
Ah frankenstein, my current favorite book and the most relatable monster's creator. I love Frankenstein's monster. He is, I dare say quite literally me. That being said, I found the movie to be a loud, annoying, unrealistic and altered adaptation. Usually books adaptations don't really disappoint me (no this doesn't include Little women) but this time I felt like turning the movie off midway and found it hard to follow the narrative. I do love the monster portrayed in the movie, and still find him adorable in a unique way but I just didn't like this adaptation and couldn't listen to it for more than 30 minutes. I will give it a 2/5, just for the beautiful introduction scene. Music
As an average enjoyer of jazz Music, I have been also lured into the weirdly tiktok cosplayer dramatic acting-likeish contemporary jazz which is just Will Wood and Handsome Devil. I also found out that, there still exists a site called Soundcloud that people still actually use. And I believe its something we should look back on and appreciate. I especially love the comment section of the songs, gives music a more collaborative experience, as it should be and has been until the rise of spotify and other music platforms where you would be offline or online with no ability to comment. Don't forget to give a listen to these gems.
Other stuff!! Now, I am very tired (it's 4:29 AM) and don't want to make this any longer than it already is, I can sense that you, the reader, is also kinda bored probably. So here's what I did to have fun this summer.
